Oxford Townhouse Renovation: Breathing New Life into an Edwardian Gem

This semi-detached property, spanning 2,777 square feet over three storeys, was primed for transformation. Working alongside Niki Schafer Interior Design, the goal was clear: to turn this seven-bedroom house into a practical yet beautiful family home, seamlessly blending period charm with modern living.
Objectives and Goals: The renovation aimed to rejuvenate the property while preserving its historical integrity. Central to the project was creating a harmonious living space that balanced functionality and elegance, catering to the needs of a busy family lifestyle. This included reimagining the layout to introduce new spaces, updating existing ones, and ensuring the home felt cohesive and inviting throughout.
Before the Renovation: The Oxford Townhouse, despite its generous layout and previous single-storey kitchen extension, had areas that felt dated and disconnected. For such a large property it lacked that ‘wow factor’ primary suite. The solution? The family bathroom and guest bedroom were reconfigured to create a luxurious master suite, complete with an ensuite and walk-in wardrobe, enhancing both the functionality and appeal of the home.
Scope of Work: The renovation encompassed a full redecoration of the seven-bedroom property, maintaining the Edwardian character while introducing modern touches. Key aspects included:
- Re-tiling the kitchen floor without compromising the existing underfloor heating.
- Installing traditional-style radiators to complement the period style.
- Transforming the downstairs cloakroom with elegant wall panelling, tiles, and new sanitary ware.
- Undertaking structural changes to craft a bespoke master bedroom ensuite and walk-in wardrobe.
- Adding bespoke joinery throughout the home to optimise storage solutions.
The project, which commenced in March 2022, concluded in July 2022, staying on schedule and demonstrating the team’s commitment to meticulous planning and execution.
Challenges and Solutions: A significant challenge arose when the team discovered a previously hidden chimney in the family bathroom, requiring additional structural support. Jackson Building Solutions acted swiftly, engaging a structural engineer and installed the necessary steel supports promptly, ensuring the project could continue without major delays.
The existing kitchen floor also presented a unique challenge; the design brief required re-tiling while preserving the underfloor heating, necessitating a careful and precise removal of the existing tiles.
Results and Outcomes: The completed renovation delivered a beautifully cohesive home, featuring a luxurious master ensuite, walk-in wardrobe, two separate studies, two children’s bedrooms, and two guest bedrooms. The downstairs was transformed into a light-filled space with a redesigned kitchen (complete with bar area), living room, and library, each room thoughtfully curated by Niki Schafer Interior Design to reflect the family’s lifestyle. The home not only increased in functionality but also in value, and its impeccable design did not go unnoticed; the project was shortlisted at the SBID International Awards 2023.
