Kernanderry: A Sustainable Vision Recognised at the BuildIt 2024 Awards

We are thrilled to announce that our Kernanderry project has been shortlisted for the BuildIt 2024 Awards in not one, but two prestigious categories:
Best Timber Frame Project
Best Architect

This recognition celebrates the innovation, craftsmanship, and dedication that went into delivering this sustainable, energy-efficient home in Oxfordshire.

Why Kernanderry Stands Out

Kernanderry is a modern home designed to exceed expectations for both performance and aesthetics. Working alongside a talented architectural team, we brought to life a vision of sustainable luxury that combines low-energy construction with stunning design.

Key Features That Earned the Recognition

  • Sustainability at Its Core: Achieving a 72.9% reduction in CO₂ emissions, the home incorporates a high-spec timber frame structure, triple glazing, and premium insulation to achieve exceptional U-values.
  • Renewable Energy Integration: A 5.20 kW photovoltaic (PV) array powers the home, reducing grid reliance and contributing to its outstanding environmental performance.
  • Architectural Excellence: The home’s layout seamlessly blends modern design principles with functional living spaces. The incorporation of a Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) system ensures comfort and efficiency year-round.
  • Airtight and Efficient: With an impressive air permeability rating of 1.2 m³/(h.m²), Kernanderry demonstrates a level of precision that’s rare in residential builds.

A Shared Vision

This project reflects the strength of collaboration between Jackson Builders and the architectural team, with every detail—from materials to systems—carefully chosen to deliver both form and function.

Being recognised in the Best Timber Frame Project and Best Architect categories is a testament to the hard work of everyone involved in bringing Kernanderry to life.

The BuildIt Awards celebrate the very best in self-build and custom home projects across the UK, and we are honoured to have been shortlisted among such inspiring work.

Outdoor Living Areas – Expanding Your Home Beyond Its Walls

As homeowners seek to maximise their living spaces, the demand for functional and stylish outdoor areas has surged. Here are our top tips for creating fabulous outdoor living spaces extending your living space and offering a perfect blend of nature and convenience.

The Importance of Outdoor Living

Outdoor spaces are increasingly seen as an extension of the home, providing additional areas for relaxation, entertainment, and dining. According to a survey by Rated People, 60% of UK homeowners have invested in enhancing their outdoor spaces, reflecting a growing trend towards alfresco living.

Key Features of Modern Outdoor Spaces

Outdoor Kitchens: No longer limited to simple BBQs, outdoor kitchens are becoming full-featured cooking areas equipped with grills, sinks, and even refrigerators. These setups allow homeowners to entertain guests without having to go back and forth from the main kitchen.

Comfortable Seating: From weather-resistant sofas to cosy fire pits, comfortable seating is essential for creating inviting outdoor spaces. Consider materials that can withstand the UK’s variable weather while still offering comfort and style.

Landscaping and Gardens: Sustainable landscaping with native plants not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also reduces maintenance. Incorporating features like water-efficient irrigation systems and composting can further align outdoor spaces with sustainable practices.

Outdoor living areas are transforming the way we use and enjoy our homes. By creating inviting, functional spaces that connect the indoors with the outdoors, homeowners can significantly enhance their quality of life. Whether it’s a quiet garden retreat or a bustling entertainment area, outdoor living spaces are becoming an essential part of modern home design.

Open-Concept Living Spaces – The Heart of Modern Home Design

Open-concept living spaces have become a hallmark of modern home design, offering flexibility, light, and a sense of spaciousness that traditional layouts simply can’t match. In the UK, this trend is transforming residential construction, creating homes that are not only more functional but also better suited to the way we live today.

The Rise of Open-Concept Design

Gone are the days of compartmentalised rooms; today’s homeowners prefer fluid spaces that merge the kitchen, dining, and living areas into one cohesive unit. This layout not only maximises the use of space but also facilitates better movement and interaction, making it ideal for both everyday living and entertaining.

Benefits of Open-Concept Living

One of the key benefits of open-concept design is the increased natural light. By removing walls and using larger windows or skylights, these spaces can feel brighter and more welcoming. Additionally, open layouts provide more flexibility, allowing homeowners to adapt spaces for multiple uses—be it a home office, a play area, or a cosy reading nook.

Design Tips for Open-Concept Spaces

When designing an open-concept space, consider using consistent flooring and colour schemes to create a unified look. Furniture placement can help define different areas without the need for walls, and strategically placed rugs can anchor spaces within the overall design. Also, consider incorporating sliding doors or partitions to offer privacy when needed, without sacrificing the open feel.

Open-concept living spaces are more than a design trend; they’re a reflection of our desire for more adaptable and connected living environments. By embracing this approach, homeowners can create spaces that not only look great but also enhance the way we live and interact within our homes.
